An Attempt to Revisit Attics in Yantai Hill is a generative moving image based on interviews with owners/descendants of historical buildings in Yantai Hill. By repeating semiotics from their memories that reflect dramatic transformation of the city landscape and their personal life. Visual work created by HUA Ziyi,a visual artist/designer and music composed by LIU Chen. FuZhou(福州)City is the capital of FuJian(福建)Province,which located in southeast China.Fujian Province has a very rich variety of dialects. As the Chinese people continued moving to the South-China-Mainland in history, linguists and historians believe they inherited the Chinese pronunciation of the ancient and middle ages(Tang and Song Dynasty). We reconstruct modified Hokkien/Foochownese(福建/福州) dialect samplers(Hokkien means FuJian in dialects). About Composing for this video, I try to use different way to process the voice sample such as time-based-modulation (delay,reverb,etc.) and frequency-based-modulation (phaser,eq,etc.) to break the “sound” of words but keep the”pronounce”and the rhyme of those dialects. Make programming language become the agency of fragmented memory and remoted self-identity. Concurrently, forming a non-narrative space* that recalls an sight in memory that has been deteriorated and farfetched, suggesting a nostalgic arrival. An Attempt to Revisit Attics in Yantai Hill proposes a poetic entry for “intertextuality” between memories, images and sounds in both time and space. Additional information: * After the First Opium War, Foochow was made one of five Chinese treaty ports. Then it began to open to Western merchants and missionaries. Yantai Hill is located at the outskirt of Foochow city, historically occupied by foreign embassies. Ironically, Foochow is also recognized for having a large number of international migrations living overseas (also known as Hokchew or Fuzhounese). Most historical buildings in Yantai Hill possess Western colonial architectural style with an attic space. Many interviewees have memories related to such a disconnected space in the building. An Attempt to Revisit Attics in Yantai Hill is the original idea and startline of *Steep Down’t Standing（陡下不立）*. I started rethinking the balance between tradition and modernity,analog and digital,so on. In an age where ideas and matter are gradually becoming polarized and antagonistic, I think it is important to maintain this introspection.As a student who hope to enter a PhD program and try to become a media/sound artist, I hope to apply this concept in my future creations.

《登上阁楼》是一段生成 (generative) 移动影像循环。 阁楼是烟台山老建筑结构里具有代表性的一个部分，’登上阁楼’尝试通过一种乔治·佩雷克式 (Perecquian)的视角，用编程语言解构老建筑主人/后人对过去烟台山回忆中重复提到的视觉意象，比如烟台山公园的萤火虫，从阁楼上眺望远方看到星星点点散落在山头的红砖， 闽江上蜑⺠串联的渔火等。这种在黑暗中弥散的，转瞬即逝的散光在像素中重新达成了一 种诗意的再现，成为碎片回忆影像的载体。在声音部分，合作声音艺术家刘辰，将福州话 方言采样经过编曲重塑，构建一种非叙事的朦胧感官叙述来补全“视线”在时空中的“不可 到达”。 ‘登上阁楼’尝试在时空中为回忆、影像和声音之间为观众构建一个可以称之为“互文性”(intertextuality)的空间，用一种诗意的进入，为观众打开烟台山的记忆“阁楼”。
